What is Technical Analysis

Line

Technical analysis provides the tools to successfully navigate the gap between intrinsic value and market price across all asset classes through a disciplined, systematic approach to market behavior and the law of supply and demand.

Ever wonder why a security trades way above or way below intrinsic value? How it can stay depressed or elevated for so long? The study of markets and the behavior of investors is the core discipline of technical analysis. The CMT Association is committed to helping investors, analysts, and traders understand the drivers of price including momentum, sentiment, and the supply or demand for a security at any given time.

A tool that complements other investment disciplines, many institutional analysts, strategists and portfolio managers fuse technical research with other analytical approaches, such as quantitative, fundamental and macro-economic methods.

Ethics and Standards of Practice

Line

A Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct (Code and Standards) are fundamental to the values of any profession. Following a recent partnership agreement, the CMT Association and CFA Institute now follow a single Code and Standards that benefits the global financial community by setting the highest standards of education, integrity, and professional excellence. Since their creation in the 1960s, the CFA Institute Code and Standards have promoted the integrity of CFA Institute members and served as a model for measuring the ethics of investment professionals globally, regardless of job function, cultural differences, or local laws and regulations. The CMT Association joins the CFA Institute in promoting a single standard for all finance professionals.

CMT Association members must abide by the Code and Standards and are encouraged to notify their employer of this responsibility. Violations may result in disciplinary sanctions by CMT Association, including revocation of membership and the right to use the CMT designation.

Michael Carr, CMT recently held a webcast presentation covering an Overview of the CMT Association Code of Ethics on July 29th, 2015. The archive of this webcast can be seen in the CMT Association Video Archives.
