Mathew Verdouw, CMT – Founder and CEO, Optuma
The Sharpe Ratio revolutionized portfolio evaluation when it was introduced in 1964, providing a groundbreaking method for comparing and ranking investments. But is it truly the definitive metric for assessing portfolios or quantitative models in today’s complex financial landscape? In this presentation, Mathew will examine the most significant pitfalls of the Sharpe Ratio—highlighting real-world examples where it falls short—and introduce the theory behind a cutting-edge metric: Variability Weighted Return (VWR).

Discover how VWR offers a more robust and accurate approach to performance evaluation, addressing the limitations of traditional metrics.

3:00 pm Strategies for Protecting High Momentum Portfolios
Bill Kelleher, CMT, CFA – Moderating Portfolio Managers, Teixeira Partners
Volatility is often perceived as a risk to be mitigated, but for seasoned portfolio managers, it presents a unique opportunity to capture alpha. In this session, Teixeira Partners PMs will share insights from decades of experience deploying mean-reversion techniques to capitalize on market inefficiencies. As a dynamic tactical hedge fund, Teixeira Partners employs Volatility Capture strategies that complement and diversify traditional momentum and trend-following approaches.

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how systematic trading models can exploit short-term price dislocations, the role of volatility overlays in portfolio construction, and how these strategies fit within a broader hedge fund investment framework. Whether you’re an asset allocator, risk manager, or trader, this session will provide actionable takeaways on incorporating volatility-driven alpha strategies into your investment process.
