6:30pm    The Practical Perspective of a Sell-side Analyst: Lessons Learned – Brett Villaume, CMT, CAIA
While the methods of technical analysis are well documented, it us up to the end user to accurately apply them. As a sell-side analyst, I have personally experienced and learned to avoid some common mistakes in the way technical tools are applied. During this lecture I will explain some of the pitfalls and misperceptions that lead traders, analysts, and portfolio managers alike to make incorrect buy and sell decisions and show specific situations in which these mistakes could occur. Additionally I will share my experiences as a sell-side technical analyst advising institutional clientele and what methods I found to be most effective.

6:55pm    Building Systems in Bloomberg’s BQUANT platform – Jamie Coutts, CMT, CFTe

7:10pm    The Three Time Frames of Mindful Investing – David Keller, CMT
A mindful investor is aware of the present, learns from the past, and plans for the future. The most important aspect of market awareness is understanding your investment horizon and using a toolkit that is line with that time frame. We will review technical approaches that are most applicable to short-term, medium-term, and long-term investing, and address common mistakes made by institutional investors. We will also discuss how applying the lessons of mindfulness training can help you manage risk as well as manage your own behavioral biases.

TOPIC
Gann Swing Charts – Quantifying Gann’s Master Trend Detector
Mathew will introduce the Gann Swing Chart and explain how they provide a fantastic way of identifying trend. He will also show how they can be used in conjunction with other Technical Analysis or as a stand alone trading system. Gann referred to his Swings as his “Master Trend Detector” and he used them to identify the direction of the markets. While the concept is simple, the reality can get very complex. Mathew will explain how the swings are constructed, including some of the more difficult concepts around them. Using advanced quantitative tools, Mathew will show how the system works and the testing that supports the concept that Gann created over a century ago.
