Denver Chapter of QWAFAFEW featuring Jack Strauss, PhD @ Cactus Club
Apr 26 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

The Denver Chapter of Quantitative Work Alliance for Applied Finance, Education and Wisdom  invites you to their meeting on Thursday, April 26th.

TOPIC
Bitcoin: Predictability and Profitability via Technical Analysis
We document that Bitcoin returns, while largely unpredictable by macroeconomic variables, are predictable by 5- to 100-day moving averages (MAs) of its prices, both in-sample and out-of-sample. Trading strategies based on MAs generate substantial alpha, utility and Sharpe ratios gains, and significantly reduce the severity of drawdowns relative to a buy-and-hold position in Bitcoin, which already has a Sharpe ratio of 1.9. We explain these facts with a novel equilibrium model that demonstrates, in the absence of cash-flows, rational learning leads to joint predictability of returns by different horizon’s MAs.

TOPIC
Trading: It’s completely mental!
Paul will demonstrate that trading is completely mental by looking at cognitive biases in two parts:
* How we trade including mechanical versus discretionary trading, decision making and risk management.
* Why and what markets we trade, which trading platform / software we use, which instruments we trade with, which broker we use, and our approach to financial education and training.
Key to the presentation will be an attempt to model the cognitive biases together to demonstrate those we are susceptible to at each stage of the trade, rather than viewing them as distinct phenomenon as is typically the case.

TOPIC
Optex Bands – Building on Market Profile
Mathew will be explaining how he created a dynamic version of market profile and how, through research, they stumbled on an extremely reliable way to identify oversold securities that are ripe for a short term mean reversion trade. Mathew will explain the process step-by-step and share the quantitative results from his research. While this is an in-depth session, it shows how Technical Analysis is still evolving with brand new indicators. Whether you are a short term-trader looking for new ideas, or a long term portfolio manager looking for better timing, this session will give you a lot to think about, and hopefully open your eyes to new ways of leveraging the foundations of TA into your own new indicators.
