Professional Membership is reserved for individuals who are currently, or were previously, employed in a professional capacity that relates to the field of Finance and who annually attest that they comply with the Association’s Code of Ethics.
Applicants who seek to become a Charterholder entitled to use the CMT designation must have passed the CMT Program Level III exam and attained a minimum of three (3) years of approved professional work experience prior to submitting their application.
Applicants who seek only to become Professional Members and therefore are prohibited from using the CMT designation, must have attained a minimum of five (5) years of approved professional work experience prior to submitting their application.
Approved Professional Work Experience
Someone with approved professional work experience:
- Has worked professionally in a job that relates to the field of Finance, including financial management, corporate finance, investment banking, accounting, audit, advisory services, research and analysis, banking, insurance, and similar roles.
- Supervises, oversees, or manages individuals or teams who practice such activities.
- Teaches, trains, or coaches such activities.
- Publicizes such activities as a member of the media.
Work may be either full-time or part-time, but prospective members must have received compensation for their services. For example, managing personal investments or those of family and/or friends’ investments (without compensation) does not constitute Approved Professional Work Experience, nor does volunteer activity.
Application References
To apply for Professional Member Status, applicants must arrange for references.
- Obtain three (3) references who are Professional Members in good standing.
- No more than one (1) of your references can be affiliated with your current employer.
CMT Association recommends that applicants seek out references early in the CMT Program candidacy to foster relationships with them as mentors.
Recommendations for Finding References
Recommendations for finding references: Introduce yourself at CMT Association events and chapter meetings, connect through provided links with presenters and authors featured in CMT Association publications, join the CMT Association global online community on Discord, and/or search the MyCMT Membership Directory for members who are “willing to sponsor.” If those options aren’t fruitful, you are welcome to contact Member Services at admin@cmtassociation.org for assistance in finding references.
Once a Professional Member Application it submitted, it will not be possible to change references. Each reference will receive a unique link through which they will be able to complete a Sponsorship Questionnaire. Therefore, it is crucial that applicants have explicit confirmation of their references’ willingness to participate before submitting the application.
Application Best Practices
Save your application as a draft until you receive confirmation from your three (3) references.
- Wait until all three (3) references are confirmed before you enter their emails in your application and submit it.
- Applications with less than three (3) references will not be accepted.
- Once you submit your application, notify your references that they will receive an email directly from Submittable.com to complete their questionnaire. If your reference has difficulty locating this email, they may need to check their “spam” or “promotional” folders.
- Revisit your application to check on the status of your outstanding reference questionnaires.
- Remind references to complete their questionnaire if it has not been received after 7 days.
