CMT Association is proud to announce its new partnership with the Robert W. Plaster School of Business at Cedarville University through Cedarville’s inclusion in CMT Association’s Academic Partner Program.

Selection for the CMT Academic Partner Program signifies a strong commitment to students’ career readiness and applied learning. Institutions in the CMT Academic Partner Program demonstrate academic rigor in financial courses ranging from quantitative methodologies to behavioral finance, as well as portfolio management and other key aspects of technical analysis.

With this partnership, the two institutions illustrate an innovative solution to the growing demand for student education and career preparedness, while advocating for the advancement of technical analysis. Technical analysis, which is a crucial part of investment and trading decisions, has evolved over hundreds of years. While modern technical analysis retains its roots in classical observations of market behavior, it extends beyond pattern recognition to employ groundbreaking quantitative methodologies and rules-based trading-system design and testing.

Jonathan Burson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Finance and faculty advisor for the Student-Managed Investment Fund said, “At Cedarville, we are committed to providing an exceptional education rooted in academic excellence and a biblical worldview. Our partnership with CMT Association strengthens this mission by offering students access to premier educational resources that empower them to make informed, real-world financial decisions. These resources are particularly valuable for students involved in the student-managed investment fund, where they can directly apply their skills to improve fund performance. Furthermore, the opportunity to engage with industry professionals and sit for the CMT Level I Exam equips our students with the expertise and credentials needed to excel in the field of financial analysis, securities trading, and portfolio management. We are truly grateful for this collaboration and look forward to the transformative impact it will have on our students’ futures.”

The Chartered Market Technician (CMT®) Level I exam is designed to test foundational knowledge of technical analysis and the application of technical tools in financial markets. It is the first of three exams in the CMT certification program and serves as an entry point for candidates to gain a comprehensive understanding of technical analysis principles and how they can be used in real-world financial decision-making.

Three Key Learning Outcomes for Financial Professionals include:

  • Understanding of Market Behavior and Trends:
The CMT Level I exam helps professionals develop an understanding of how market prices behave over time and how to objectively identify trends, cross-asset correlations, and market cycles. Professionals learn how to interpret price movements and recognize market conditions that could signal opportunities or risks.
  • Proficiency in Technical Tools and Indicators:
The exam provides a solid grounding in widely used technical analysis tools, including structures for time-series data (such as market profile, point-and-figure, and candlestick charts) and a range of statistical indicators for trend, momentum, breadth, and volume studies. This knowledge is critical for professionals who need to analyze individual securities, sectors, industry groups, and the market internals for indices. A mosaic of information can help identify potential buy or sell signals, and assess market momentum.
  • Application of Risk Management Principles:
While Level I focuses on the theory of technical analysis, it also introduces key concepts in risk management. Professionals learn the importance of controlling risk through stop-loss orders, position sizing, and understanding volatility. These principles are vital for ensuring that investment strategies are not only profitable but also sustainable over time.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Cedarville University’s Robert W. Plaster School of Business, where an emphasis on ethics, leadership, and real-world experience sets its graduates apart,” said Tyler Wood, CMT, Executive Director and CEO of CMT Association. “Cedarville’s commitment to experiential learning—highlighted through initiatives like the Student-Managed Investment Fund—equips students with practical, hands-on knowledge in finance. Through the CMT Program Level I Exam, students signal to future employers their dedication to learning and passion for financial markets. Exposure to the CMT body of knowledge during their undergraduate journey differentiates their skillset and perspective on markets. Gaining a solid foundation in market behavior, quantitative methods, and risk management strategies provides them with not only specialized expertise but also a professional edge. We have seen how this scholarship program helps students transition confidently from academic to industry roles. Our mission is to equip all our candidates for high-impact careers in a competitive global market.”
