Technically Speaking, January 2025

Dear Readers,

As we step into 2025, I am excited to share with you the transformative updates to the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) Program. For those embarking on this journey, you are joining a global community of professionals dedicated to improving investment decisions through technical analysis.

The CMT designation represents the highest standard of excellence in the field, achieved through three levels of rigorous examination and a deep commitment to mastering the discipline. Our members span a diverse range of roles in the financial industry, from hedge funds and portfolio management to institutional trading and investment research, in 137 countries worldwide.

This year marks a significant leap forward in how candidates engage with the curriculum. The body of knowledge for the 2025 CMT Program is now fully integrated into a digital Learning Management System (LMS), making study materials accessible anytime, anywhere—on your computer, tablet, or mobile device. No more lugging heavy textbooks; instead, you will have a streamlined, interactive experience that helps you track progress, take notes, and efficiently prepare for the exams.

Additionally, the curriculum itself has been refined to focus more directly on key learning objectives. Crafted by industry experts, including Ralph Acampora, John Bollinger, Bob Prechter, and so many more, the new materials ensure that every reading is designed specifically to help you excel in your mastery of the subject matter and achieve success in your CMT exams. With your exam registration, you gain immediate access to this invaluable resource—eliminating the need to search for study materials elsewhere.

In our commitment to making the CMT Program more accessible, we have also reduced the total cost of registration + study materials for 2025. This initiative underscores our dedication to fostering a more inclusive, globally connected community of technical analysts.

There has never been a better time to pursue the CMT designation. With enhanced curriculum delivery, cost-effective access, and an unwavering community supporting you, the path to earning your charter has never been clearer. As you take this step, remember the words of Paulo Coelho: There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

We believe in you. Your success is our shared success. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. And if we’re not yet connected on LinkedIn, send me a request—I look forward to meeting you.

What follows below is our guiding vision for the CMT Program in 2025 and beyond. Comprising much work by the Board of Directors and core volunteers in Association committees, these statements propel us forward and answer the “Why?” of everything CMT Association stands for. I welcome your feedback and input.

Best wishes to all CMT Candidates on your journey, and thank you to every CMT charterholder globally for your stewardship.

Building a Strong(er) Community of Technical Analysts

Welcome to the first edition of 2025 of Technically Speaking! New year, new you, right? Well, maybe not a new you, but perhaps a more engaged you.

I first heard about the CMT designation 15 years ago from a well-tenured trader on Bay Street (the Wall Street of Canada for those of you who are unaware), shortly after graduating university. Back then, I was considering the CFA, but after doing my due diligence, I decided to pursue the CMT. It seemed like a niche designation that would give me an edge in the industry, especially in the career path I wanted to pursue. At the time, there were 5 CFAs in Toronto for every CMT charter holder globally!

To immerse myself in the world of technical analysis and the community, I started attending the Toronto Chapter meetings and quickly became a regular. When the opportunity arose to volunteer and help organize the events, I jumped on it. That led me to become the Toronto Chapter Head, then VP of the CSTA (Canadian Society of Technical Analysts), and finally, the President of the organization.

As you can imagine, my involvement in the CMT Association and the broader technical analysis community has been instrumental in my career growth. The network I built through the association opened doors and provided invaluable support at different stages of my journey. What started out as a CMT sponsorship by Larry Berman more than 12 years ago, turned into a mentorship and the ability to work with Larry side-by-side over the past 4 years. Most of the time you don’t know what a particular decision will result in the future to, but when you look back years from that decision, it all seems to make sense in the greater scheme of things.

My point is this: get involved with the CMT Association! Start anywhere, in any capacity, and the rest will work itself out.

As a board member, I’m involved in various committees dedicated to driving the CMT Association forward. One is the Chapter Development Committee, focused on growing and enhancing our local and regional chapters. We’re currently finalizing an updated format for how these chapters will operate, and we need your help! This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the CMT Association and connect with fellow technical analysts. If you’re interested in getting involved, please reach out – we’d love to hear from you!

I encourage everyone, from those new to the field or the CMT Association to seasoned professionals, to become more engaged. Volunteer your time, give back to the community, and mentor newcomers. By working together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant community of technical analysts, where everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
